Birthstones are symbolic gemstones associated with the month of a person’s birth. Amethyst is a crystalline quartz which comes in shades of purple, lilac or mauve. It is believed to bring good luck wittiness and good health. The word amethyst comes from the Greek meaning "without drunkenness".

Aquamarine is a blue-green stone. It has been called "Water of the Sea", because of it's colour. It represents happiness and understanding. It is the stone of sailors, believing it would be protection for them on water.

The name Diamond is derived from Ancient Greek and means "For eternity, courage and health." The popularity of diamonds had risen because of the increased quality in cutting and polishing techniques.

The Emerald is the sacred stone of the Goddess Venus. It was thought to preserve love. The emerald has also long been the symbol of fidelity and goodness. It is considered by many to be the stone of prophecy.

The Pearl is the oldest known gem and for many centuries it was considered the most valuable. Unlike other gems, the pearl is organic in matter derived from a living creature. Pearls represent peace, nobility and beauty.

Rubies are pink to red coloured gemstones. They are considered to be the most powerful gem in the universe. Given has a gift, the ruby is a symbol of friendship and represents the qualities of love, enthusiasm and strength.

Crusaders, who visited St. John's Island (now called Zabargard and recognised as the first source of Peridot), introduced this gem to Europe. Early Christians considered it sacred and believed it gave success, peace and love.

Sapphire means blue in Greek. The blues in Sapphire range from very dark to very pale, other colours are also available. The Sapphire was called "The stone of destiny", it is reputed to bring serenity and truth to it's owner.

Opals are unique among gemstones because they are not crystals. They are a hardened silica gel, always containing small amounts of water. It is believed that their energetic properties are very health giving and bring purity and hope.

The name Topaz comes from the Greek topazos, meaning "a precious stone". It is said to give mental clarity as well as wisdom, courage and sincerity. It is a relatively hard stone. It is believed to help individuals change their world.

Turquoise, one of the oldest gemstones, was a symbol of wealth in many ancient cultures. The turquoise is seen as the symbol of love, happiness and luck and brings peace to a home, taking on the characteristics of the owner.
